Much is made of the demise of the high street
as major chain stores struggle to deal with the
fundamental changes in the way we transact.
Soundbites give us a sense that the high street
itself is dying: somehow it will only be saved if
landlords and councils act benevolently.
But do we really want to get back to the “good old days”
of the nineties and noughts when Saturday
afternoons would be spent trawling the chain stores?
After years of rampant consumerism,
retail was arguably over-valued by investors
and town planners alike.
